If you simply want to find out whether dog grooming is for you, an introductory taster course could be the best place to start. If your goal is to work as a professional dog groomer, you may want to consider a recognised qualification such as the City & Guilds Level 2 or 3.

For those looking to eventually run their own grooming business, a higher level qualification or a course that includes salon management may be more appropriate. 

Taking some time to consider where you want your training to lead will make it easier to choose a course that suits your ambition.

Start with a Dog Grooming taster

If you have never worked in a grooming salon before, you may not know whether dog grooming is the right career for you. 

At D-O-G Grooming Studio Courses, our Dog Grooming Half Day Taster Course allows you to experience a real working salon environment without the pressure or commitment of enrolling on a longer course. 

The half day combines observation of our qualified team with hands-on experience, giving you an opportunity to see what professional dog grooming is really like.

The course runs from 10:00 to 13:00 and is available Monday to Saturday at either our Wandsworth Common or Wimbledon Park studios. 

For anyone who is unsure whether they want to pursue a career in dog grooming, this can be an excellent starting point.

Consider the level of qualification you need

If you are serious about becoming a professional dog groomer, the level of qualification you choose is another important consideration. 

The City & Guilds Level 2 Dog Grooming Course is designed for those looking to become dog grooming assistants and is suitable for beginners with no previous dog grooming experience.

The course takes 15 days in total, including 10 days of practical salon training and 5 days of home study. During your salon training, you will groom approximately two dogs a day while developing your practical skills and learning basic styling techniques.

For those who want to progress further within the industry, the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma offers more advanced training.

The Level 3 course consists of 20 days of hands-on salon training and 8 days of home study, giving an overall course length of 28 days.

It is aimed at those who already hold the City & Guilds Level 2 qualification and want to develop their skills further for a career in professional dog grooming.

Look at combined courses

If you are starting from scratch but already know that you want to pursue dog grooming as a career, a combined qualification could be worth considering.

The Level 2 & 3 City & Guilds Combined Training Course allows students to complete both qualifications together, without needing previous dog grooming experience.

The course takes 41 days in total, including 28 days of practical salon training and 13 days of online home study. 

By successfully completing the required practical assessments, synoptic assignment and theory exam, students can achieve both City & Guilds qualifications. 

This can be a good option for students wanting to progress from beginner level through to advanced qualifications without taking the courses separately.

Think about your learning style

Everybody learns differently, so it is important to consider how much practical training you want from your course. 

Dog grooming is a hands-on profession. While online study and home learning are important, nothing beats practical experience working with real dogs, in a real salon.

When comparing courses, look at how many days are spent actually grooming dogs and what type of practical experience is included.

Our City & Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 courses offer flexible attendance options, allowing students to train on a part-time or full-time basis throughout the duration of the course. 

Depending on your availability, you can attend as little as one day a week or as many as six days a week.

The iPet Level 3 Diploma also offers flexible training options, meaning your training can be fitted around your existing commitments.

Look at what is included in your course
